2003 Activities

As part of its business policy, ELECTROPERU S.A. gives a high priority to protecting and conserving the environment, for which it has drawn up programmes and taken action aimed at ensuring that generating electricity is carried out with the least possible negative impact on the environment and also reducing solid waste pollution of the river Mantaro.

The principal environment-related activities carried out in 2003 were:

Environmental awareness campaign in the Mantaro valley

The solid waste which reaches the Tablachaca reservoir via the river Mantaro are removed there and disposed of at the Kichaus landfill site. ELECTROPERU continued, through CENERGIA, with an awareness campaign aimed at the inhabitants of Huancayo, Huancavelica and the areas on both banks of the river Mantaro and its tributaries, in order to minimise contamination of these water courses by solid waste.

Septic tanks and soakaways at Tablachaca reservoir

Maintenance of toilets, septic tanks and soakaways at Tablachaca reservoir. These services are used by the security personnel and operation and maintenance personnel working at the reservoir.

Environmental park at the power station Restitucion

Maintenance of the Environmental Park at Los Machos " Restitucion" power station, with appropriate conservation for two small lakes in which two species of fish have adapted to the temperature and climate of this area. Tilapia and trout.

Ventana 5 landfill site

Maintenance of the Ventana 5 landfill site, which was built to dispose of solid waste generated by the police detachment and security personnel, thus preventing waste being dumped on nearby hillsides.

Villa Azul industrial landfill site

Maintenance of the Villa Azul industrial landfill site, which is used to dispose of industrial waste generated by maintenance of the Mantaro Complex.

Measurement of electromagnetic fields

ELECTROPERU S.A. contracted two companies; INICTEL and CENERGIA to measure electromagnetic fields in different installations of the Mantaro Complex as well as at Campo Armiņo; the results of these measurements reveled that the strength of the electric and magnetic fields fell within the parameters stipulated by ICNIRP.
