History

In 1945, after an intensive investigation, Antunez de Mayolo introduced the study for hydroelectric exploitation called first curve of the Mantaro River in the province of Tayacaja, Huancavelica. Between 1954 and 1961, several preliminary studies by consultants from the US, Japan and West Germany were made. Those confirmed the approach of Antunez de Mayolo.

Thus, in December 1961 was created The Electric Corporation Energy Mantaro (CORMAN), a public company responsible for developing and exploit the hydroelectric potential of the Mantaro River.The Corporation began operating in 1963, making a comparative study of the proposals from several international companies. As a result, it was decided to start formal negotiations with the GIE Impregilo Group from Italy, which took place between March and June 1966.

The Servicing Agreement of procurement, construction and financing of the Mantaro Project was signed on September 1, 1966. The construction equipment started to arrive between January and June 1967, when the civil works began.

These works should begin by the task that allow make viable the complex in the area. An important aspect of these tasks were the construction of new roads that allow transporting materials and equipment. Also, the improvement of existing roads, allowing these withstand the passage of heavy equipment required. They had to build large camps in Mantacra, Villa Azul and Field Armiño, in order to accommodate the thousands of workers who labored in the work. These camps came to shelter 10,000 workers and their families

The first stage of the Mantaro Complex involved the construction of a dam on the Encañada of Vigapata, from which would start a tunnel 20 km to Armiño Field, then a pressure line would take the water to the place where there would build a power house for three generation units of 114 MW each. This stage was opened on October 6, 1973. In the second stage of the project four additional generators were installed with the three existing ones and two penstocks were increased. With what it was possible to achieve a total power of 798 MW. This stage was opened on May 1, 1979.

 
Five and a half years later, on November 10, 1984, was opened the third and final stage of the Mantaro project, consisting on the Restitution Hydroelectric Power Plant. This stage takes advantage of the turbined water from Santiago Antunez de Mayolo Hydroelectric power plant to generate 210 MW additionally, through this second plant located in cascade. With that, a total of 1008 MW is completed through out the complex.

 
It's been over 36 years since the construction of the Mantaro Project began. Although the main works are completed, there's continue improvements of water support in the Mantaro River watershed and other works of improvement of the system, in order to ensure good service and bring more power. This brings a development to many villages of the country. Mantaro Project works were truly spectacular because of the rugged geography and the harsh climate in the area. More than one victim took this project on its implementation and even today, when walking through the complex, one feels the shudder to appreciate the great works of mankind.
