Location and Description

 
The hydrographic basin of the Mantaro is located in the central region of the country and comprises the departments of Pasco, Junín, Huancavelica and Ayacucho.El Mantaro River originates in Lake Junín, which is regulated by the Upamayo dam, the reservoir of most important seasonal regulation of the country.Located at 4080 m, Lake Junín has a total capacity of 556 MMC and an adjustable maximum useful volume of 441 MMC.

Due to the variation of the flow rate of the Mantaro River between periods of drought and rainfall, is necessary the construction of regulation in order to minimize the risk of water shortages and at the same time optimize the use of the installed capacity of the complex. Surplus water during the rainy season can be stored and used during the months of dry season, between May and October, to increase the flow of the River up to the required level of 96 m3/sec, covering the deficits of water for power generation. Electroperu, comes running works of hydric strengthening in the lagoons of the middle and upper basin of the Mantaro River since 1993.

Currently there are dams of regulation by a total of 224,76 Hm³ in the sub-basins of the rivers Huari, Pachacayo, Moya, Quillon and South West of Lake Junín.
 
In the South West of Lake Junin it has built 03 dams representing a storage capacity of 31,8 Hm³.

In the sub basin of the Huari river are the Huacracocha and Lacsacocha dams with a storage capacity of 15,2 Hm³.
 
In the upper part of the Pachacayo river , in the Sub basin of the river Cochas are: dams Caullau, Calzada, Huaylacancha, Carhuacocha, Azulcocha and Tembladera, totaling a regulated volume of 64,8 Hm³
 
Dams were built in the Sub-basin of the Pinascocha river of: Vichecocha, Yuraccocha and Nahuincocha, with a total regulation of 14,2 Hm³.
 
In the Sub-basin of the Quillon River have been built 5 dams that regulate a total of 56,0 Hm³ in the lagoons of: Coyllorcocha, Yurajcocha, Balsacocha, Huichicocha and Nahuincocha. 
 
In the Sub-basin of the river Moya 42,78 Hm³ taking advantage of the natural vessel of the Chilicocha lagoon are regulated. This lagoon is desaguó through a tunnel of shock set at 40 meters of depth, and retrieves the maximum level by means of a work of recruitment in the Callancocha River, consisting of an intake, a tunnel and a canal to the lagoon.
