ELECTROPERU commemorated the 47th Anniversary of the commissioning of its Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo Hydroelectric Plant
The Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo Hydroelectric Plant is the product of an intense investigation by the Pioneer of Electricity in Peru, Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo, who presented the study for the hydroelectric exploitation of the so-called first curve of the Mantaro River, in the Province of Tayacaja, Huancavelica.
Recalling history, Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo was born on January 10, 1887 in the city of Aija, capital of the province of Aija, Ancash. In 1905 he entered the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos, as a student in the section of Mathematical Sciences, achieving the highest averages. In 1909 he was awarded the original diploma of electrical engineer by the University of Grenoble, France. He was an illustrious engineer and scientist who acquired vital experience and knowledge in the operation of power plants and electro-steel plants thanks to the studies he studied and carried out in Europe with the purpose of expanding his knowledge and soaking up technological advances in his professional field. doing specialization practices and visiting factories in Italy, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Norway, among others.
Thus, when he returned to Peru, he proposed to build a hydroelectric plant that would take advantage of the Mantaro River and the enormous waterfall where, according to his calculations, one million horsepower could be generated in 1945.
Thus, in the sixties, the construction of this power plant began just two kilometers from the place where it had been proposed, for that reason the hydroelectric power station bears his name in honor of this wise Peruvian.
The Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo Hydroelectric Plant has an installed capacity of 798MW with 7 generators which together with the Restitución Hydroelectric Plant form the Mantaro Hydroelectric Complex with an installed capacity of 1008 MW, being considered one of the largest and most important in the country .
On October 6, our hydroelectric plant completed 47 years of arduous and constant work in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has allowed us to demonstrate our optimal capacity to adapt to the great current challenges, managing to continue generating clean energy for Peru .
This has been possible, thanks to the fact that in ELECTROPERU the discipline and commitment of our workers makes the Mantaro Hydropower Plant 100% operational.
The pillar of health and safety is the most important, especially when it comes to our main asset, our workers, therefore in the fight against COVID-19 and to prevent its spread in our company, a rigorous protocol of biosecurity. Thanks to compliance with this protocol, we have been able to maintain the Mantaro Hydroelectric Power Plant, the largest hydroelectric power station in the country, to date, producing its maximum capacity, managing to produce between 15 and 19% of the energy consumed by the Interconnected System. National.
With the biosecurity protocol, we strictly comply with the provisions of the Central Government on social distancing, hand washing and use of masks. Additionally, our protocol has made it possible to guarantee the safety of the personnel on duty, taking as a first measure the modification of the duration of the shifts, which were from 12 days to 30 days. The personnel, prior to entering the work shift that corresponds to them, are rigorously evaluated and medical checks are carried out upon entering and leaving the plant.
Additionally, to guarantee the health of our employees in the facilities, it is mandatory to take a daily temperature, use a mask, wash hands continuously, and constant monitoring by the occupational medical staff.
At ELECTROPERU we are duly prepared to comply with biosafety protocols, committed to the health of our workers, for which we respect and comply with the respective medical check-ups and social distancing in our facilities.
Another aspect that is taken into account in this protocol is remote work that prioritizes the health of our workers, especially workers with identified risks, with whom virtual meetings and videoconferences were prioritized both at the Mantaro and Lima headquarters.
During this pandemic, not only the discipline and commitment of our workers made it possible to fulfill our mission, which is: to contribute to the development of the country, generating renewable energy, every day of the year, it was also possible to make solidarity visible for our neighboring communities to the achieve the donation of more than 1000 "baskets with energy", where all workers added their efforts
